“What you measure is what you get” – this well-known management maxim perfectly expresses the great significance of KPI for performance measurement. Everything that is measured in the enterprise and discussed in management meetings will steer behavior and decision-making in the course of daily business.
The definition and execution of targeted and balanced KPI systems (or balanced scorecards) for corporate controlling is, therefore, a strategic management task. But take a look at the business reality at many enterprises, and you will find that the deployed KPI and KPI systems are lagging far behind the ongoing process of change: KPI systems have grown historically, have not been reconciled with each other, are incomplete, or have not been adapted to the current conditions and goals. This means that there is a need for action, and we would be glad to tackle this task together with you!
Our Goal
Our aim is to contribute to the design of effective KPI systems and to ensure their sustainability. To achieve this aim, our experience shows that the following success factors have to be taken into account:
- Careful judgment is required to define appropriate KPI – less often means more!
- The entire process, from data collection to evaluation, has to be taken into consideration; balanced scorecard projects often fail because after the initial data capture, the ongoing data collection requires too much effort, or the data quality does not fulfill requirements.
- Intuitive and attractive presentation of information is crucial to ensure that decision-makers really take notice of this information, and then internalize it.
- Ideally, targeted measures should be implemented to increase the sustainability of the KPI system (e.g. linking a balanced scorecard to bonus models).
